The name Amrita was inspired by a love for the island, a distinctively magical haven on Cape Cod. Amrita Island was first developed by the Baxendales, an affluent family with an unparalleled passion for nature and preservation. Honoring the spirit of their generosity, 10% of the profits from every bag of coffee is donated to organizations whose mission is to preserve the environment, wildlife and restore nature in a manner consistent with the legacy of the Baxendales.
In Hindu mythology the great god, Vishnu, sustainer of the universe, went in search of Amrita, the nectar of immortality. When the gods drank the “youth-renewing waters”‘ they achieved immortality.
Beautiful flowers, another source of rest and healing, flourish in a wealth of foliage with colors never equaled inland.
The island is one of the crown jewels of Buzzards Bay.The sparkling springs surrounding the island are tempered by the Gulf Stream. The shady groves of pines, oaks and poplars and surrounding waters are home to sparrows, warblers, mockingbirds, robins, owls, partridges, eagles, crows, sea gulls, ducks, geese and herons. These birds have found out that, like all good Hindus, the Amritans hold all life sacred.
Beautiful flowers, another source of rest and healing, flourish in a wealth of foliage with colors never equaled inland. At low tide, the water displays the abundance of blue point crabs, fish, clams, scallops and oysters which can be appreciated on a drifting row boat.
This idyllic setting is where the Baxendales envisioned a safe haven for wildlife: safe from snares, and where love reigns eternal. As in the Arabs’ legend, “He who once drinks of the waters of the Nile shall thirst therefor forever after.” And so those who come to the waters of Amrita are also bound to return forever to the enchanting shores of Buzzards Bay.
